Pulmonary infectious diseases, classified by the World Health Organization into either acute or chronic, are any infections that affect the lungs. These diseases can range from the common cold, allergies, influenza, pneumonia, and long-term chronic illnesses such as tuberculosis. They are caused by a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, which are seen as the agents responsible for initiating an infection. Treating pulmonary infections requires effectively identifying and diagnosing the disease in question, as well as optimizing the patient’s current state of health to prevent further disease progression. One of the most common non-invasive tools used to measure the effectiveness of the treatment of pulmonary infections is the use of etCO2 (end-tidal carbon dioxide) capnography. This procedure involves measuring the expired CO2 levels in patients’ airways over a period of time. This is done by placing a small, flexible tube, with a sensor on the end, in the patient’s nose for the end-tidal capnography. EtCO2 capnography helps clinicians to understand the effect of both acute and chronic pulmonary infections by providing an accurate and easy to read measure of the patient’s respiratory rate and the amount of expired CO2.

A & T Respiratory Lectures has developed a series of easily accessible and affordable educational courses focused on various aspects of Patient safety through Infection control initiatives. The course content is designed and presented by experts in the field.
